  1. How do I use the 2-button mouse? In general for Windows '98 and Windows NT, the left button signifies a selection. When instructions say to "click", they usually mean the left button. The right button is usually used to inspect or to set properties of something. When instructions want you to use the right button, they will specifically say to "right-click" on something.

  2. How do I login to the PCs?
    All of these PCs are already logged in to ACS, but not to you. To login to you, click Start at the bottom left of the screen, then click on ACS Account Utilities, then click on Log-on.

  3. How do I logoff? Hold down the CTRL and ALT keys while hitting DEL and click Logoff from the resulting dialog box.

  4. Where is my home directory? After you login, your home directory will be on a virtual disk known as H:. You can find it by double-clicking on the My Computer icon in the upper-left corner.

  5. Where is the class public area? After you login, the class public directory is on a virtual disk known as P:. You can find it by double-clicking on the My Computer icon in the upper-left corner.

  6. How do I look in folders? Double-clicking on a folder will open it up and let you look inside,

  7. How do I move a window? Click in the title bar, keep the left mouse button down, and move the mouse. Release the button to place the window in its new location.

  8. How do I resize a window? Click on the lower-left or lower-right corner, keep the left mouse button down, and move the mouse. Release the button to place the window with its new size.

  9. What are those symbols in the upper right hand corner of windows?
    These symbols are shortcuts to doing various things.
    The X will kill this window, and most likely, the program that created it. It is also how you close a folder.
    The _ will turn this window into an icon on the task bar at the bottom of the screen. This is nice for de-cluttering your screen. Click on its entry on the task bar to restore it.
    The other symbol is to expand the window to fill the entire screen. Click it again to restore the window to its original size.
    Sometimes there is a second row of these symbols as shown above. The top row refers to the entire program, while the bottom row refers to a file the program is working on. Thus, to close a document you are editing without closing the program, click on the X in the bottom row.

  10. How do I move a file from one place to another? Click on the file with the right mouse button, keep holding the right mouse button down, drag the file to its new location, then release the button. Select Move Here from the pop-up menu.

  12. How do I delete a file? Right click it and select Delete from the resulting dialog box.

  13. How do I create a new folder? Click on the File menu in the folder you are in, select New, then select Folder.

  14. How do I rename a file or folder? Click on the file with the right mouse button. The file's name is highlighted. Type in the new file name.

  15. How do I kill a runaway job? Hold down the CTRL and ALT keys while hitting DEL and click End Task from the resulting dialog box. Select the job to kill from the resulting dialog box list.

  16. How do I check the load on the PC? Hold down the CTRL and ALT keys while hitting DEL and click Performance from the resulting dialog box.

  17. How do I transfer files to other computers? You will use the FTP program. Click on Start-Programs-Communications-WS_FTP-WS_FTP95LE. Click on Connection and fill in the machine you want to connect to, the login, and the password. Use the put command to put a file onto the remote machine. Use the get command to get a file from that machine. If it as a binary file, such as an image file, use the binary command first before getting or putting.

  18. How do I login to another machine? Click on Start-Programs-Accessories-Telnet. Then fill in the name of the machine you want to connect to.

  19. How do I use the PC floppies? Plug them into the floppy drive on the PC. The is drive A:.

  20. How do I copy a file to a floppy disk?
    The floppy disk (A:) icon is hiding in the My Computer folder. Find it. To copy a file onto the floppy, click on the file with the right mouse button and drag it to the floppy icon. Select Copy Here from the pop-up menu. You can also right click on the file and then select Send To and then select A:.

  21. How do I copy a file from a floppy disk? The floppy disk (A:) icon is hiding in the My Computer folder. Double-click on it. To copy a file from the floppy, click on the file on the floppy with the right mouse button and drag it to where you want it to go. Select Copy Here from the pop-up menu.

  22. How do I do an image screen dump of the PC screen?
    1. To dump the entire screen, hit the Print Screen key. (You will probably need to also hold down the Shift key.) This copies all the pixels on the screen to the clipboard.
    2. Click on Start-Programs-Microsoft Photo Editor.
    3. Inside the Photo Editor program, click on Edit-Paste as New Image. This will bring in your image.
    4. "Lasso" just your graphics window with the dashed rectangle. Then select Image-Crop.
    5. Click File-Save As and save your image as a .gif or .jpg file.

  23. What kinds of images can I include on a web page? Web page images must be in .gif or .jpg format.

  24. How do I start Netscape? Click on Start-Programs-Communications-Netscape Navigator-Netscape Navigator

  25. What other programs are on these PCs? You have Word and Excel for word processing and spreadsheets, respectively. You have AutoCAD and IronCAD for CAD work (we will use IronCAD). You have Visual C++ for C and C++ programming.
